May 21, 2023 – At approximately 11:59 am, a man tragically lost his life after being struck by a train near the railway crossing on South McCleary Road just south of the Walmart in Excelsior Springs.

Police reported that it appeared the victim had recently been shopping at Walmart and was walking along the tracks when the collision took place. The identity of the man has not yet been disclosed. Excelsior Springs Police were first to arrive on the scene, but the Missouri Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident. Law enforcement officials asked that all citizens stay clear of South McCleary Road as they conduct their investigation.

Adding to the heart-wrenching scene, a brown dog with a red collar was spotted near the accident site. Officers presume the canine to be the victim’s pet, but they have been unable to capture the animal.

Rural railroad tracks pose unique risks to pedestrian safety. With limited visibility and potentially infrequent train schedules, it is crucial for pedestrians to exercise extreme caution near train tracks. Always adhere to designated crossing areas, never attempt to outrun a train, and be aware of your surroundings, listening for any approaching trains.

We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
