Breaking Boundaries and Solving Mysteries: ‘Miss Holmes’ at Slightly Off Broadway Theatre

Girls sell flowers to audience members before the Miss Holmes show at Slightly Off Broadway Theatre

Excelsior Springs’ local community theatre, Slightly Off Broadway Theatre, is known for its innovative and compelling theatrical performances. Their latest offering, “Miss Holmes,” is no exception, presenting a cleverly reimagined universe of the beloved characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This production, under the direction of a talented local team, casts Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson as women, played brilliantly by Samantha Barrett and Tara Watson, respectively. This gender swap is not just a superficial change but dives deep into the societal and familial constraints of Victorian England, presenting a refreshing narrative that challenges the traditional gender roles of the time.

The plot of “Miss Holmes” revolves around an intricate mystery involving a corrupt police inspector whose wives suspiciously turn up dead. Miss Holmes, equipped with a sharp deductive mind, and Dr. Watson, who struggles against gender barriers in her medical career, navigate the murky waters of crime in London with intelligence and a bit of defiance. The script weaves these elements into a story that entertains and provokes thought about historical and ongoing gender issues.

Local critic Shannon Morgan praises the play saying, “What a lovely night to see the play performance of Miss Holmes, a Murder Mystery at the Slightly Off Broadway Theatre. All of the actors did an amazing job. As always, Samantha Barrett gave a great amount of texture to her lead role as Sherlock Holmes and Tara Watson, as Dr. Dorothy Watson knew exactly how to play off of Sherlock Holmes’ character. Together, they are an unbeatable team. It was a delightful concept to give the play a feminine twist. I loved the character of Lizzie Chapman, so well portrayed by Andi Schiller. David Shewell, as Thomas Chapman, was quite sinister and he commanded his role throughout the production. The kind Michael Stamford, played by Tim Schmidt, is priceless as he and Dr. Dorothy Watson try to free Miss Holmes from an institution! The set design and the costumes were superlative. I hope you take the opportunity and treat yourself to a great performance!“

As “Miss Holmes” continues its run, it is a must-see for both fans of traditional mystery and those looking for something that stretches the boundaries of typical theatre fare. Do not miss the chance to experience this unique and thought-provoking production! The show runs the weekend of June 7-9 and 14-15, 2024, and tickets can be purchased online at sobtheatre.org/product/miss-holmes.

This story was corrected after misstating that “Tara” Watson was “Tanya” Watson, our apologies.
