A Tough Pill to Swallow: Monroe Pharmacy Closes After 40+ Years

Monroe Pharmacy

In what came as a surprise to many area residents, Monroe Pharmacy in Excelsior Springs and Lawson ceased operations at the close of business on September 29th and transferred ownership to Walgreens in Excelsior Springs. Pharmacist, Mike Russell, said the closing has been planned for some time, but due to a non-disclosure agreement with Walgreens they could not publicize widely without running the risk of jeopardizing the deal. According to a notice posted on the pharmacy door the decision was not an easy one. “This past 40 years has flown by and we couldn’t have imagined a better work environment, community, or employees to have spent our time with… you have all been like a part of our extended family.” Mr. Russell stated that there was no emergency, medical or otherwise, that prompted the transfer of ownership, just simply the desire to transition to the next phase of life. The posted statement indicated that the owners Kevin, Mike, and Rich are ages 65, 67, and 72, respectively.

The notice also outlined the procedures for the transfer of ownership to Walgreens. As posted, “Walgreens will have all your prescriptions on file and when calling in for your refills using the prescription number on our existing bottles, they can fill them as before. Be patient this first week or two during transition and identify yourself to them as a former Monroe Pharmacy customer… Any prescriptions you had called in and not picked up will be available at Walgreens. Anything we owe you will be delivered or mailed to you.”

The posted letter ended with a heartfelt thank you, “The entire staff would like to say that through all the laughter, fun, and difficult times, it was our privilege to have been a part of your lives and we will miss you all more than you know.”
